You’ve probably heard this in brainstorming sessions:
“There’s no such thing as a bad idea!”
Let’s be honest.
There are absolutely bad ideas.
Some of them could bankrupt your company by Tuesday.
But the intent behind that phrase is right.
The real problem?
Most teams accidentally do this:
Generate an idea
Immediately judge it
Debate it
Kill momentum
Repeat
It’s like trying to sprint while stopping every three steps to tie your shoes.
If you want more and better ideas, learn to Defer Judgement
Define the problem clearly
Set a timer and ONLY generate ideas
(no judging, discussing, elaborating or questioning)Then evaluate using clear criteria
(practical, innovative, cost, impact, etc.)
Separating creation from evaluation is where the magic happens.
If your team’s brainstorming feels more like slow-motion debate club, we are here to help develop your leaders and help create a culture of innovation. Just click the link below to learn more.
